Dental technology has made dental implants become more and more commonplace. They have a very high success rate and as time goes by, it’s going to be an option for more and more people. But how much do you know about them?
First, the basic stuff – the dentist or specialist will do a thorough exam and then put a titanium screw and have it fuse with your jawbone. That’s a multi-week wait. Then he or she puts an abutment and allows that to heal. Then comes the replacement tooth, which is a crown. Now you will have a dental implant.
This is more of a deeper dive into everything you need to know about dental implants.
You Need to Have Solid Bone Structure
This is one of the most, if not the most, important criteria when comes to dental implants. There has to be enough mass in the area of the jaw that will fuse with the screw. If that is not the case, then the implant will not have the support that it needs and will wind up becoming loose.
There is an option for the dentist to try – a bone graft. This can hopefully help the jaw get enough mass to be able to allow the dentist to proceed. The dentist or specialist will either put a piece of bone from your jaw or from a cadaver or animal. The second option keeps there from having to be a second surgical site.
Don’t expect the graft to be instantaneous – it can take several months for it to happen. Then the dentist or specialist will continue with the process that was listed above.
They Can Save Adjacent Teeth
Other options may require work to be done on other teeth to make room. Not so with dental implants. The titanium screw is put in one area and then the abutment fits in that same space. The implant anchors itself – it doesn’t impact any of the other teeth in the vicinity. This also makes brushing and flossing easier since it acts as a natural tooth.
They Stay In All the Time
You don’t have to worry about giving these the denture treatment, taking them out to soak.etc. The dental implants get brushed and flossed just like regular teeth. They won’t shift around – barring any problems with jaw mass as time goes on. This gives you peace of mind – but it also means that you have to maintain a regular brushing and flossing routine, since things can happen under the tooth if things are neglected.
The Crown Can Be Made of Different Material
It depends on where the crown is going to placed in your mouth. If it’s going to be in the front, then they will likely be made of porcelain or ceramic. If they are going to be in the back of the mouth, they may be metal since they won’t be seen and are also much more durable to withstand the pressure that comes with chewing.
Dental implants are a very good investment, since they last up to 25 years. They more than pay for themselves over the course of that time.
There is a lot of information out there about dental implants, but all you have to do is look at well-known sites to give you the information that you need. If something looks too good to be true, chances are high that it is. Also, make sure that any dentist has a lot of experience doing them.
