[inaudible 00:00:26] when I go to the counter, I give the gate agents toothbrush and toothpaste. Automatically upgrade to whatever seat you want. I go into the cabins with pilots because cabins are open as you board the plan. I said, “Guys, are you New York based?” “Oh yeah.” “Well come to the office for when you have a break,” or the flight attendants, here’s a toothbrush and toothpaste.
Little marketing tools mean a lot. When I travel like a lot of us do, I go into a hotel, the Hilton, the Marriotts, the front desk, I give them toothbrushes and toothpaste. “Oh, I’ve heard of you. Yeah, when I come to New York, yeah, I’ve heard of you” or “I know that.” It’s little things, the amenities get you in a better room or get you better service, and so forth. So it’s always good even when you go to a restaurant, you know? It’s advertising. You never know who’s gonna come and see you.
That’s the strangest thing. I give out cards to as many people as I can and introduce myself. But it works. And the funny thing is I’ve had people come in four or five years later with a business card. “You know Doc, remember when I was here at United Airlines? I had this in my wallet four or five years. I haven’t had any problems since then.” But they remembered because you gave it to them personally. You did it to them, and that’s what they want. They want that personal touch.
